Wubi – Linux without the hassle

Wubi is an unofficial Ubuntu installer for Windows users that will bring you into the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other application. If you heard about Linux and Ubuntu, if you wanted to try them but you were afraid, this is for you.

This looks interesting and i might give it a whirl if i get the chance! All in a 9.8 meg install file…can’t be bad can it?
Limited time online and lack of a decent riamhaire are the only things holding me back although it does seem to get some decent tips of the hat online!

Unix Millennium bug – Doomsday in 30 years!

“I just wanted to remind everyone that Saturday, January 19th 2008 will mark the beginning of the 30-year countdown to the Y2K38 bug, when Unix time will overflow 32 bits. Some 30-year loan calculation software might start having problems with this over the weekend.”

In short we will now have 30 years to try and avoid the hype that was Y2K! No planes falling from skies and no stock exchange melt downs! You woke up hung over to shit just as you did any other new years only you were a year older!

Instead of leaving it too late or leaving it to chance, i intend re-mortgaging on the run up to christmas of 2037, ya never can be too careful

Keyboards of the future

The above is something you might have seen on star trek only a gazillion times smaller but this site has the 10 most strangest keyboards. I thought that keyboard that split to make sure you typed properly years ago was freaky, you really need to take a butchers at some of these!

My prizewinner that at least smells futuristic is this one:

How very robocop of them…kicks ass tho!

The Virtual Keyboard is a laser keyboard. The unit is the size of a cigarette lighter, and uses Bluetooth technology to connect it with your pc. The keys are all illuminated onto a flat surface. You can simply type from there. Although the lack of feeling to the touch of the “keys” may not be same this is the ultimate space saver, and shows promise of many similar products, be it computer products or not, to come from this technology. You can get your hands on one of these for around $150.

Not bad value in my opinion…

Laptop for 314 Euro!

I want one I want one!

One of the best smallest portable Pc’s with ‘vumph’ i’ve seen in a long time. I think the winner of this one is that it is so small and is the size of a book but still has enough power to do most of your online publishing kinda tasks. The spec is as follows:

• Display : 7″
• CPU & Chipset : Intel Mobile CPU & chipset
• Operating System : Linux System/ Hardware Compatible with Windows XP
• Communication : 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
• WLAN : WiFi 802.11b/g
• Memory : 512MB, DDR2
• Storage : 4GB S.S.D. (Solid-State Disk)
• Web-Cam : 0.3 Mega Pixel Video camera
• Audio : Hi-Definition audio CODEC, Built-in stereo speaker, Built-in miccrophone
• Keyboard : Qwerty UK keyboard
• Expansion: 3 x USB ports
• Battery Life : 3 hrs (4 cells)
• Dimension & Weight : 22.5 x 16.4 x 2.15~3.5 cm, less than 1kg

Grrr only 4 gig storage! Means photos and video are out the window but it’s not designed for that purpose. If wifi was more available i would definitely buy this on the spot! For now i’l just hang tight and throw it onto the wishlist :-\ *sigh*

Dublin is no longer to be a free wifi city!

Dublin City Council has u-turned on a decision to make Dublin a free wifi city. The project estimated at costing 27 million would have provided free wifi access to a blanket area that would take in the city centre and outlining areas. However a spanner in the form of the EU was promptly thrown in the works stating that it was contrary to EU Law on State Aid!

D.C.C. still intends to provide free broadband on a test basis to Ballymun and Ballyfermot where there is a lack of coverage. Whoop di fuckin’ do!

Obviously the Council would’ve had heat off the many telecommunications providers who charge over the odds to customers for wireless services (gosh dammit the American way!).

What some of you might not know is that wireless access is available in all Dublin City Council libraries and most public buildings. And I think I should let readers know this blogger is greatly indebted to the Fingal County Council’s library service without which the use of the free internet service to its members, this blog wouldn’t be published!

Irish Young Scientists Exhibition 2008

Today sees the kick start of this years Irish Young Scientists Exhibition being held in the RDS, Ballsbridge. The exhibition has attracted over 500 stands with far ranging projects to the hierarchical structure or turtles to why some people are better multi-taskers than others.

I took part in the exhibition many years ago with some project about how the internet adds to the value of an Irish small to medium sized business, complete sinker but had a great week!

Listening to the radio this morning and a young girl from Loreto on Stephens Green talking about her above mentioned project on the hierarchical structure of turtles made some good listening:

GIRL I have turtles and I wondered why one of my turtles had eaten the other one.
INTERVIEWER So you wanted to investigate whether there was some social structure to the hierarchical structure of turtles. What did you find?
GIRL That there was, it may not be true of all turtles because that would mean we would have to get a lot of turtles.
INTERVIEWER So the reason your turtle ate the other turtle would suggest that there is a higher structure ? (blood from a stone moment)
GIRL Yes I asked the man in the pet store and he said it wasn’t unusual that one turtle would eat another.
INTERVIEWER Um eh Thanks for joining us…

Maybe the jaysus turtle was hungry! Maybe the man from the fuckin’ pet store should’ve been there! Anyways it’s a great eye opener into technology and the wonder of science so head along! Spot the kids with the talent and spot the ones just on the doss!
